CLR #51

1 - “Radio Nurse” - Love Like Fire. I had a friend who went to Tijuana once. When he came back, he had love like fire.
2 - “Trouble” - The Rakes. Post-punk revival return #1.
3 - “Girls Who Play Guitars” - Maximo Park. Post-punk revival return #2.
4 - “Feel Like Taking You Home” - Brendan Benson. What did Jack White do that took away Brendan’s shimmery pop gene?
5 - “My Eyes” - Travis. Gorgeous, like their old stuff.
6 - “My Moon, My Man” - Feist. Sultry. Slinky. I need more S adjectives.
7 - “Under the Milky Way” - Tearwave. Very faithful cover of the classic Church song from some new shoegazers.

CLR XMS #50

Way too much caffeine mars this podcast, so my apologies. However, in honor of transmission #50, I’ve assembled a few of my favorite bands and picked some of my favorite songs from them.

1 - “Airbag” - Radiohead. Best side one, track one of recent times.
2 - “London Calling” - The Clash. The Only Band That Matters.
3 - “Paid in Full” - Eric B. & Rakim. This album made me a star in my final days at San Leandro High School.
4 - “And Your Bird Can Sing” - The Beatles. From a band that perfected perfection, this was one of their highest peaks.
5 - “Say It Isn’t So” - Hall & Oates. We all have our guilty pleasures, don’t knock it.
6 - “Raspberry Beret” - Prince. Not fully appreciated in its day, one of the finest pop jams of the 80s.
7 - “Prophets of Rage” - Public Enemy. I got a right to be hostile! I still remember the first time I heard this, amazingly on KPRS about two weeks before It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back was released.
8 - “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out” - The Smiths. The sweetest dark song ever.
9 - “I Will Follow” - U2. An ode to lost mothers.
10 - “Don’t Dream It’s Over” - Crowded House. My all-time favorite song.
11 - “So You Wanna Be a Rock and Roll Star” - Pearl Jam. Are the rules finally changing, in the age of podcasts, blogs, etc?

CLR XMS #49

1 - “Drive Blind” - Ride. Some classic shoegaze from the early 90s.
2 - “I’m Not the Only One” - The Brother Kite. Current shoegaze, with a poppy-tinge.
3 - “Nevermind the Phonecalls” - Earlimart. If only the weather was like this song sounds - summery and gorgeous - rather than our 2 above windchills.
4 - “Sad Songs” - The Frames. Solid effort from these Irish lads.
5 - “A Ghost in the Arcade” - Idlewild. They’re bringing the rock back after a couple albums that leaned towards the pop and ballads.
6 - “Crumble” - Dinosaur Jr. They sound like they never went away.
7 - “Waking Up and Walking Out” - Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s. Fine local music.
8 - “Reeboks in Heaven” - Fujiya and Miyagi. I always thought they wore sandals in heaven.
9 - “Somebody Got Murdered” - The Specials. Clash cover, quite well done.

CLR XMS #48

A tribute to the ladies
1 - “A Good Start” - Maria Taylor. I can’t decide if her voice is like a warm blanket on a cold, winter day or like a gentle breeze on a summer day. Either way, it’s a good thing.
2 - “Rehab” - Amy Winehouse. Is it any surprise she’s a drunk with a name like Winehouse?
3 - “Fallen Snow” - Au Revoir Simone. I’m sick of our falling snow here in Indy.
4 - “Living in America” - The Sounds. Best looking woman in modern rock?
5 - “Prescilla” - Bat for Lashes. Loovely, as the Irish would say. Not that she’s Irish, I’m just saying.
6 - “If You Go Away” - Emiliana Torrini. We need some Icelandic representation.
7 - “To the Country” - Laura Viers. Brand, spanking new. I don’t even have an opinion yet.
8 - “She Sells Sanctuary” - The Distants. Covering one of my all-time favs. Quite faithfully.
